Stuart Agnew MEP: Possibility for Member States to restrict or prohibit the cultivation of GMOs - followed by bluecard question to Greens MEP Bart Staes - (Strasbourg - 13.01.2015)

On the face of it this seemed an easy one for UKIP. Here was the opportunity to allow some power back to Member States, and we would have presumably voted in favour. But on a closer look at the thing, it was anything but. The Commission was going to be involved at every single stage, even to a greater extent than it is now. Therefore, we have reluctantly had to abstain from this. Crucially, though, Amendment 20 should have been voted on on its own, because that genuinely did give some power back to Member States. However, that got subsumed in the rest of the thing and would have been effectively drowned out.

It will be very interesting to see, in those Member States which decide not to cultivate these crops, whether they will ban their consumers from eating them when all the constituents are imported. That will be a remarkable sight when people see they have not got enough to eat because of this legislation.

Stuart Agnew then asks a bluecard question to Greens MEP Bart Staes regarding contradictory amendments under a single bloc-vote - please see video link.

Stuart Agnew MEP: The EU and the global development framework after 2015 (in writing) - (Strasbourg - 25.11.14)

UKIP believes the EU is one of the primary causes of poverty in the world, due to its vindictive trade policy and its rapacious behaviour in the world's poorest countries. We note that non-EU development actors have been infinitely better at dealing with poverty, notably India and Brazil, which have both made positive contributions to fighting poverty in the world's poorest nations. We invite the public to contact our offices for a more detailed explanation of how the EU harms the world's poor.

Given the on-going breakdown in relations between the West and Russia, and in particular the humanitarian and military crisis in Ukraine, it is important for all actors to pay particular regard to potential consequences of their actions. Protection of animals during transport (debate) European Parliament – Strasbourg 11.12.12

Stuart Agnew, on behalf of the EFD Group: – Mr President, we already have adequate legislation on animal welfare. What is missing is the enforcement of current rules.

In the UK, we have two inspection bodies: the RSPCA and Trading Standards. They will frequently be present at markets or abattoirs where lorries full of livestock are being unloaded. They will check the truck. Does it have retaining gates at the back internally? Are the internal compartments of the right size? Is it properly ventilated? Then they look at the animals. Are they of roughly the same size within those compartments? Are long-horned separated from polled? Have they included heavily pregnant ewes? Are there any lame animals? Are there any weak animals? Did any animals give birth? These people prosecute if they are not happy with what they find.

I object in the strongest possible terms to politicians from countries where people engage in something like bull-baiting lecturing me and other farmers on how to transport our livestock. There is nothing scientific about eight hours. It is a purely random figure. This is gesture politics.
